Editor's review

Mending the World is a collection of reflective essays that probes deeply into the cultural conflicts and spiritual predicaments of a society in transition. The author, He Xiongfei, a seasoned publisher and cultural observer, approaches the spiritual world of contemporary Chinese intellectuals from a distinctive angle, seeking possible paths to bridge the rifts between tradition and modernity, ideal and reality.

The book's value lies first in the acuity of its questioning. He Xiongfei does not stop at describing phenomena but probes the loss of humanistic spirit, the disorder of value systems and the individual's bewilderment within grand narratives under the impact of the market economy. Using 'mending' as a metaphor, he implies that this is not only the repair of the external world but the rebuilding of an inner moral order. This dual dimension lifts the work beyond ordinary cultural commentary and gives it the depth of philosophical reflection.

In terms of style, He Xiongfei continues his trademark speculative essay form, combining a scholar's rigor with a writer's sensibility. The pieces collected here span a considerable period, thus tracing the development of the author's thought; readers can sense a cultural observer's sustained reflection on China's social change over two decades. This diachronic writing makes Mending the World not only a spatial cultural inquiry but also a temporal record of thought.

It is worth noting that although the book addresses many weighty topics, its overall tone is not pessimistic. While exposing problems, He Xiongfei maintains a constructive attitude, seeking balance between criticism and construction. This stance makes Mending the World especially valuable among critical works: it not only diagnoses the malady but attempts to prescribe a remedy.

For contemporary readers, the book's value lies in the unique window it offers onto the spiritual history of Chinese intellectuals. Through He Xiongfei's writing, we glimpse a generation's confusion, struggle and perseverance amid momentous change; this literary rendering of a collective inner journey is itself an important cultural document.
