Summary

World of Gods is a long fantasy novel by Yuewen Group author Eternal Flame, following his Confucianism and Daoism to Sagehood. It was serialized on Qidian from December 2019 to November 2024, totaling roughly 3.7 million characters in 1,230 chapters. The story takes place in a vast otherworld where multiple pantheons coexist: on Mount Olympus at the world's center, Zeus, king of the gods, holds the thunderbolt spear amid a forest of deities; in the Silver Hall of the north, Odin holds the spear of heaven and looks down on the mortal world; by the Nile, Amun-Ra drives the sun boat, his gaze turned toward the Aegean; in the land of the two rivers, Marduk reigns, and the hero-king Gilgamesh, bearing a divine oracle, campaigns against Greece. The gods of the Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian mythologies each hold their own ground, scheming and contending openly and covertly. The protagonist, Su Ye, is the son of a baker in Athens. After his parents are attacked and killed, he is pressed by creditors and severely injured in a conflict; while unconscious, a soul from another world merges with his memories. With the elf talent activated by the "ruins space" within him, he enters Plato's Academy to study magic, starting as a black-iron mage and growing among a circle of "transcendentalized" philosophers and friends such as Socrates and Plato. The work combines ancient Greek philosophy with a magic system; the protagonist breaks through continually by virtue of his understanding of the nature of the world, passes through academy life, the power struggle between commoners and nobles in the city-state, and the chessboard set by the gods, advances step by step to demigod and even god-king status, and ultimately confronts the gods directly. The worldview is grandly laid out, with dense collisions among pantheons; it offers the exhilaration of passionate leveling while running through the striving undertone of "heaven helps those who help themselves."

Editor's review

Reading tips
