Xian Dong

Xian Dong is a long-form xianxia cultivation novel by the web author Biluo Huangquan, sharing the same worldview as his earlier work Xian Mo Zhan Ji and set roughly six hundred years after the events of that story. By this time the cultivation world has been transformed beyond recognition, while the magical civilization of the Western Continent of Light is highly advanced; flying islands, magical treasures, arcane arts, and the imperial intelligence apparatus weave together into a world both grand and absurd. The novel opens with a "top secret" file from the Imperial Intelligence Bureau: Director Doug and Chief of Staff Gandela are scouring for agents for a mission that must be carried out by a woman, and the buck-passing among intelligence bureaucrats along with the pettiness of selection criteria set the tone of irony and mischief that pervades the book. The perspective then shifts to characters such as Liu Tian'an and Lian Jingjing, with the story unfolding along threads including the "Immortal Arts Academy," "evil cultivators," "flying islands," and the "Alliance of the Enfeoffed Gods": there are worldly calculations such as academy training, auction houses and futures trading, and a manager system, as well as sword-cultivator ambushes, magical treasure duels, and cross-faction maneuvering. The book is divided into volumes including "Wind and Rain over Yanhuang," "Peering from the Shadows," "Rivers and Mountains Like a Dream," "Go Steal a Legend," "The God-Slaying Squad," "Rain of Fire over the Light," and the grand finale, totaling about one hundred and sixty chapters, with "This is a tapestry of life, not an epic of heroes" as its core spirit, depicting a group of imperfect ordinary people struggling, scheming, and pressing forward along their destined paths.
