Summary
Chaotic Ming is a long-form historical time-travel novel by the web novelist Yu Xin, complete at approximately 2.11 million Chinese characters across 697 chapters in eight volumes. Set during the late Wanli and Tianqi reigns of the Ming dynasty, it begins in a small riverside village in Jiangling County, Jingzhou Prefecture, where Lin Chunhong, the frail son of a farming family, grows up reading the Zuo Commentary and Strategies of the Warring States and wrestling and playing with his cousin Lin Chunde. After a sudden catastrophe befalls his family, Lin Chunhong unexpectedly gains partial knowledge and ideas from another world, setting him on a long road from self-preservation to the salvation of his society. The eight volumes—Livelihood, Power, Northward, Expansion, Arms, The Northern Foe, Liaodong, and A Great Era—trace a trajectory that starts with solving village subsistence problems, felling timber and burning charcoal, and building local industry, then moves into the jianghu and officialdom, military and administrative planning, and the consolidation of local forces, before widening to a navy, trade routes, and overseas ventures, and finally converging on the crisis on the Liaodong frontier and a reshaping of the empire's balance of power. The author describes his approach as "moderate wish-fulfillment, always grounded and plausible," and so direct depictions of battle and bloodshed are relatively few; far more space is given to strategy, institutional design, and the management of people and factions, making this a slow-burn Ming-late-era state-building and hegemony novel.
Editor's review

FAQ
