Summary
The Book-and-Sword Immortal is a xianxia and wuxia novel by the web author Sanqikai. It was serialized on Xiaoxiang Academy from November 10, 2015, and completed on March 12, 2016, running to 322 chapters and roughly 653,000 characters. Built around the line "a scholar who reads and recites poetry, a sword immortal who wields his blade to break formations," the novel creates a scholarly protagonist who is soft on the outside and firm within, patient and low-key: he tills the soil for his own pleasure, plays chess and the sheng to amuse himself, and practices the sword to strengthen himself. In daily life he contends for nothing and seems frail, yet he is a man of many means—"I may look weak, but I simply don't want to bully anyone" is practically the book's epitaph. The story begins with chapters such as "The Way of the Human World" and "The Hatred of a Broken Home," as the protagonist shows his edge after his family is ruined and his home destroyed; he then passes through episodes including "The Huangshan Poetry Gathering," "The Talents of Xuanfu," and "The County Examination," rising from scholar to xiucai and step by step entering a wider world: along the way he meets spirits such as a white fox and a green snake, is drawn into jianghu and court conflicts like "The Jiangzuo Upheaval" and "The Princess Consort of Dashun," and sets foot on the true path of seeking immortality through "Traces of the Immortal Way" and "Methods of Immortal Cultivation." The second half of the book revolves around the struggle for the "Jade Seal of the Heavenly Court" and the crisis of the "Myriad Ghosts Formation"; the protagonist crosses swords with the Sword Emperor, the King of Dashun, the emperor, and other factions, ultimately wielding his blade to break the formation, slay the King of Dashun, ascend to the "Immortal City," and bring the whole to a close with "Past Affairs." The novel weaves poetry gatherings and elegance, examination honors, jianghu loyalties, court intrigue, spirits and ghosts, and the quest for immortality into a single long scroll, with a style that is refined yet exhilarating—a traditional-flavored xianxia built on the backbone of "cultivating both book and sword."
Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for
Not a good fit for
Reading tips
FAQ
