Summary

He escapes death at the hands of the vicious Yinling Sect only to witness his mother's murder. With the self-sacrificing aid of the Three-Handed Divine Lord, who repays a debt of gratitude with his life, Leng Tianxing finds the long-rumored Nine Heavens of the martial world and diligently masters the many supreme arts within its ninefold palaces. Descending the mountain, he vows to avenge his bitter blood feud, but the Yinling Sect is shrouded in mystery, making even the nine great sects wary. With the help of a loyal and peculiar sworn brother and upright masters, he at last brings his path of vengeance to fulfillment. Yet beset by tangled passions, he meets a pair of sisters both righteous and wicked, a noble lady bearing a family feud of her own, and a devoted woman he once saved… In the end, though they share the conjugal harmony of raised trays and level brows, his heart remains unsettled.

Editor's review

This three-volume wuxia epic takes revenge as its narrative spine, yet beyond the flash of blades and shadows it lays out a wealth of emotional entanglements and struggles among martial factions. The author renders the Yinling Sect's eerie secrecy, the tiered hierarchy of the Nine Heavens' supreme arts, and the subtle stances of righteous and unorthodox sects with clear layering; the protagonist Leng Tianxing's growth from a hunted youth to a master of supreme arts follows a clear trajectory, while supporting figures such as the Three-Handed Divine Lord, who repays kindness with his life, and the loyal peculiar sworn brother add warmth to the hard-edged path of revenge. The dual treatment of "vengeance" and "passion" is especially careful: the road of revenge reaches fulfillment, yet the snares of love remain unresolved, and the closing note of "conjugal harmony, yet still unsettled at heart" lifts the work beyond mere gratified vengeance. The three-volume length suits concentrated, continuous reading, offering both the sect dynamics and fortuitous encounters of traditional wuxia and a probing of grudges, loyalties, and hard choices. Readers who favor orthodox revenge narratives and multi-threaded emotional writing will find a reasonably complete martial-world experience here.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers who enjoy traditional wuxia revenge-and-growth stories
  • Wuxia fans drawn to sect feuds and supreme-arts fortuitous encounters
  • Readers who can accept multi-threaded emotional entanglement and a regretful ending
  • Those who wish to read all three volumes in one continuous long-form experience

Not a good fit for

  • Readers who only like short, fast-paced works and won't invest in a long novel
  • Readers who reject multi-angle romance lines and regretful endings
  • Those already weary of conventional sect-and-jianghu formulas

Reading tips

  1. Read the first half of Volume One first, noting the power relationship between the Yinling Sect and the Nine Heavens to mark the groundwork for later events.
  2. Reading the three volumes consecutively works best; pause at the end of each volume to sort out the protagonist's situation and shifts in the emotional lines.
  3. As the revenge progresses, jot down each sect's stance to better understand why the protagonist is thwarted at every turn.
  4. Don't rush to judge the emotional resolution at the end; revisit the introduction scenes of the sisters and the noble lady before reflecting.

FAQ

I haven't read the author's other works—can I start with this set?
Yes. This three-volume set is a self-contained long-form story, beginning with the protagonist being hunted by the Yinling Sect; causes and consequences are gradually explained in the book, with no prior reading of other works required. As long as you accept the pacing of traditional wuxia, simply start from Volume One in order to enter the story.
Is the story continuous across the three volumes? Must I read them in order?
The three volumes form one continuous mainline: flight, the finding of the Nine Heavens, mastery of the supreme arts, descent to seek revenge, and finally the fulfillment of vengeance and the settling of emotions. Reading in order from Volume One to Volume Three is recommended, lest foreknowledge of character relationships and the ending weaken the suspense as the revenge line advances.
Are there many romance lines? Will they dilute the revenge mainline?
The romance lines occupy considerable space, involving the sisters both righteous and wicked, the noble lady bearing a family feud, and the devoted woman the protagonist saved. The romance and revenge lines advance interwoven and are not entirely separate, but they do divert part of the narrative focus; readers who prefer pure revenge stories should be prepared for this.
