Summary

Critical Point is a collection of short stories and novellas by science fiction writer Wang Jinkang, published in 2013 by Electronic Industry Press as part of the Wang Jinkang's Classic Science Fiction Collection series, with roughly 322 pages. The volume gathers such pieces as "Critical Point," "Spy Versus Spy," "Devil's Dream," "The Magic Ring," "Space Sweeper," "When the Milky Way Meets," "He Is the One," "The Sacrificed," "The Faithful Dog," and "The Hunt," covering subjects from biology and artificial intelligence to space exploration, time, and memory. It offers a concentrated presentation of Wang Jinkang's classic short fiction. Born in 1948 in Nanyang, Henan, Wang Jinkang began his career as a senior engineer and is one of the most representative authors in Chinese science fiction. His work often starts from the latest scientific discoveries, with particular attention to biology, heredity, and the succession of life forms, probing the human condition and dignity under rapid technological change. His style is cold and sharp, his narration restrained and philosophical, and he excels at driving plot through suspense, combining popular readability with the intellectual density of serious literature. The title "Critical Point" can be understood as a state: when science, life, or civilization is pushed to a certain limit, the existing order and ethics begin to fail, and people must answer anew the questions "Who am I?" and "Where should we go?" Most of the stories offer no easy answers; instead they leave the reader on that subtle boundary, to feel for themselves the shadow behind the light of technology. For readers who want a systematic look at the creative landscape of Chinese science fiction's "golden generation," this collection is a fitting entry point.

Editor's review

FAQ
