Summary

Set in the fictional Dali dynasty, *At the Abyss* follows Lian Deng, a young woman from the Western Regions who awakens in drifting sands with no memory and is given the name Lian Deng—lotus lantern—by the one who finds her, wishing her a life as pure as a lotus and free of worldly ties. In search of the Scripture of Deliverance, a text said to hold the power to raise the dead, she travels through Jiayu Pass to the capital Chang'an and stumbles into the Divine Palace, closed to outsiders for years, where she meets the legendary state preceptor Lin Yuan.

Lin Yuan has served since the founding of the dynasty, and once, when rebels besieged the city and the founding emperor was trapped, he mounted the city wall alone and turned back thirty thousand troops. With the realm at peace, he withdrew into the palace, where speculation about his age is strictly forbidden. Lian Deng expects a white-haired sage in flowing robes, but after accidentally walking in on him at his bath, the two become hopelessly entangled—he is proud, fastidious, afraid of pain, and faint at the sight of blood, and yet his lifespan rivals stone and metal: he neither ages nor dies. To a man who has walked the world alone for over a century, she is a long-absent brightness.

As Lian Deng uncovers the truth of her origins and nurses thoughts of revenge in Chang'an, the calculations hidden beneath the warmth begin to surface: the Scripture of Deliverance and the preceptor's obsession with prolonging life draw their fates into ever deeper entanglement. With humor and sharp contrast in its characters, the novel uses the strange tales of the Divine Palace and the secrets of the dynasty to tell of an immortal's search for emotional belonging across the long centuries.
