Summary

Shadow of China is a work of reportage chronicling the Chinese digital audio-video coding and decoding technology standard (AVS) system from its development to its widespread application.

After long accumulation and in-depth investigation, renowned writer Li Chunlei, with a macro yet authentic perspective and a professional yet vivid style, reconstructs in a concise span the arduous journey of AVS from creation to application.

Through more than twenty years of exploration and development and the hard work of several generations of Chinese scientists, the AVS system has grown from nothing to something, from something to excellence, and from excellence to leadership, achieving comprehensive breakthroughs and innovation. It has driven China's audio-video field to lead the world, giving wings to the development and prosperity of Chinese culture, and enabling the smart industry to make a fundamental leap from "Made in China" to "Created in China."

Editor's review

This book uses reportage to turn the process of the Chinese digital audio-video coding and decoding technology standard (AVS) system from development to widespread application into a readable narrative. Author Li Chunlei approaches the subject from a macro perspective while handling technical content in a relatively vivid style, making standard-setting, technological breakthroughs, and industrial application—topics that often feel remote—concrete and perceptible. The book presents the journey of several generations of researchers exploring continuously for more than twenty years: from nothing to something, from something to excellence, from excellence to leadership. It is both a line of technological breakthrough and a line of industrial upgrading, connecting the leap from "Made in China" to "Created in China." For readers who want to understand how Chinese standards move out of the laboratory into practical application, this book provides a rare overall脉络; for readers concerned with the relationship between technological development and cultural dissemination, it also shows the supporting role of audio-video technology in cultural prosperity. Reading does not require matching every technical detail; it is better suited to grasping stage-by-stage progress and key choices, understanding people, institutions, and industrial changes along a single timeline.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • General readers interested in the history of China's technological development who want to understand the origins and evolution of the AVS standard
  • Professionals in audio-video, communications, or standardization work who need industry background reference
  • Readers who enjoy reportage and hope to understand the process of technological breakthroughs through people and events
  • Science communicators and educators who need to present cases of Chinese innovation to students or the public

Not a good fit for

  • Technical personnel seeking detailed audio-video coding and decoding techniques or operational guides
  • Readers expecting purely literary narrative who lack interest in technology and industrial topics
  • Researchers hoping for complete industrial data reports or compilations of policy documents

Reading tips

  1. First read the table of contents and chapter titles to outline the timeline of AVS from development to application, then move into specific chapters.
  2. Do not pause over technical terms; first grasp the stage tasks and key choices, and review them together after finishing.
  3. Keep a sheet of paper to note major figures, institutions, and milestones to help understand the relay relationship among several generations of researchers.
  4. Read in connection with audio-video application scenarios you are familiar with, and consider the link between standards implementation and everyday experience.

FAQ

Can I understand this book without a technical background?
Yes. This book is reportage, focusing on reconstructing the process of the AVS system from development to widespread application rather than explaining coding and decoding technical details. The author handles technical content in a relatively vivid style, so general readers can grasp stage-by-stage progress, key choices, and industrial changes; terms can be skipped without affecting understanding of the overall journey.
What are the main applications of the AVS standard?
According to the materials, AVS is China's digital audio-video coding and decoding technology standard system, involving the encoding and decoding of audio-video signals. The book records its process from development to widespread application and mentions that it has driven development in China's audio-video field and supported cultural dissemination. Specific application scenarios should be elaborated in the book; readers can learn about its industrial implementation through the chapters.
How is this book different from ordinary science and technology reporting?
This book is presented in the form of reportage, emphasizing a macro perspective and vivid narration, placing standard development, technological breakthroughs, and industrial application into a readable journey rather than a fragmented compilation of news. It focuses on the sustained efforts of several generations of researchers over more than twenty years and is suitable for readers who want an overall context rather than isolated information.
What background knowledge is needed before reading?
No specialized technical background is required. Basic awareness of audio-video applications in daily life is enough, such as video playback and communication transmission. A preliminary interest in standardization work or industrial development will make reading smoother; the professional content in the book is handled by the author in a narrative way, and readers can simply follow the timeline.
