Summary

Eastern Palace is a historical-style romance novel by Fei Wo Si Cun, first published in 2010 by New World Press. The story begins with a line from the Book of Songs: "There is a fox, slow and lone, on the bridge over the Qi. My heart is grieved—that man has no clothes." The heroine is Qu Xiaofeng, Ninth Princess of Western Liang. Raised in the vast desert under boundless skies, indulged and beloved, she is frank and unrestrained by nature; by a marriage alliance she is sent to the Central Plains to become the crown princess of Li Chengyin, Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace. The Crown Prince stands second only to one and above all others, yet he has his own favored consort, Consort Zhao; the two were meant to be parallel lines that never meet. But within the Eastern Palace, struggles for power, groundless accusations, and hidden murderous intent draw her step by step into their midst. After a narrow escape from death, she suddenly recalls events of three years past: the youth Gu Xiaowu met her in the desert, slew the white-eyed wolf king of Tian'gen Mountain for her, and held a grand wedding for her on the grasslands—yet this same man brought down upon her a catastrophe that wiped out her entire clan in rivers of blood. The waters of the Wangchuan exist to make one forget love; when memory breaks through its bonds, separated by devoted passion and a sea of blood feud, she must choose between love and hate. The book comprises four short main chapters, five side stories, and a postscript; concise in length, ruthless in its turns, it is one of Fei Wo Si Cun's representative works of "tragic writing" and was later adapted into a television series of the same name.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
