Summary

The Three Musketeers (also known in Chinese as The Three Musketeers, French original Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a long historical novel written by the French author Alexandre Dumas in 1844, first serialized in the Paris newspaper Le Siècle. The story is set in the 1620s during the reign of Louis XIII: D'Artagnan, a young nobleman from the provinces, arrives in Paris with fifteen écus from his father and a letter of recommendation, riding a lean horse, hoping to join the Musketeers of the Guard under Captain de Tréville. In the captain's antechamber, his rashness offends three musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—and their arranged duels lead to acquaintance and then to a lifelong bond, sealed with the oath "All for one, one for all." The novel's main thread is the conflict between royal and ecclesiastical power: Cardinal Richelieu, all-powerful at court, maneuvers against King Louis XIII and Queen Anne of Austria. The Queen gives a diamond studded pendant, a gift from the King, to her former lover the Duke of Buckingham; Richelieu schemes to have her appear at a court ball without the full set of studs. Asked by the Queen's lady-in-waiting Madame Bonacieux, D'Artagnan and the three musketeers overcome every obstacle to retrieve the pendant from England and deliver it to the Queen before the ball, foiling the plot. Richelieu then sends his trusted spy Milady to England to assassinate Buckingham and besieges the Protestant stronghold of La Rochelle. The four repeatedly contend with the beautiful and ruthless Milady through imprisonment, escape, revenge, and trial, ultimately thwarting her plans. In the end, Richelieu appoints D'Artagnan a lieutenant of the musketeers, and his three friends each find their own place. Tightly plotted, vividly dialogued, and sharply characterized, the book combines the appeal of a historical panorama with popular adventure, and is one of the representative works of French Romantic historical fiction.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
