Summary

Seven Up is a collection of role-play prompt short stories jointly created by eight authors—Han Han, Cai Zhiheng (Pizi Cai), Shi Kang, Rao Xueman, Cang Yue, Cai Jun, Sun Rui, and Jiang Nan—published by Wanjuan Publishing Company in June 2008. The whole book unfolds from the same beginning: the writer Pizi Cai receives a mysterious letter signed "Seven Up," not knowing whether the sender is male or female or where they come from, only that someone has invited him to a rendezvous at a place called Wanrong Manor at the foot of Mount Everest. The eight writers then become different characters in the story, each starting from their own time and space: one becomes a carter, one an innkeeper, one a tour guide, one a stingy tourist, one a heartbroken woman, one an explorer, and one a figure of ambiguous identity suspected of being a fugitive. They travel together, confront each other, or merely pass as strangers, joking, scolding, and pranking one another along the way, packing wuxia, fantasy, mystery, and romance into the same stage, until at last the secret behind the "Seven Up" letter is revealed. About 254 pages, paperback, it is billed by the publisher as "an MMORPG in literature" and "the first-ever famous-authors role-playing novel"—eight bestselling writers of widely different styles share one worldview and one set of mysteries, each writing a segment, reading like a word game of clashing styles.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
