Realm X

《Realm X》is a competitive online-gaming novel by the web author Yao Wuhen, roughly 450,000 characters long and complete. The title is the name of the game itself: the story opens in a Jiangnan starter village modeled on Yu Ling, where players crowd into a village of pink peach blossoms and green willows to begin their virtual lives. The protagonist takes the assassin's path, bearing from his first appearance the air of a wandering swordsman—“ten paces, one kill; a thousand li, no trace; brush off the robe and go, hiding name and fame.” Low-key, solitary, companioned by shadow. The book strings the protagonist's growth along quest lines: leaving the starter village, meeting kindred spirits, changing class in the ancient city of Yuezhou, hunting orc lords in dense forests, then valley dungeons, stronghold offense and defense, bloody stands at famous passes, a desert trek, and night battles in Dragon City—moving from solo play to teamwork. The author drives the plot with dense combat scenes and fast scene changes; dungeons, auctions, guild strongholds, system patrols and other MMO fixtures are all present, interspersed with players' loyalties, rivalries, and schemes. Overall it is a straightforward, briskly paced traditional online-gaming novel, centered on leveling up and brotherhood, while also depicting ambition and rules in a virtual world.
