Series
This volume is the opening installment of Secret War, the five-issue Marvel limited series published in 2004–2005, written by Brian Michael Bendis and fully painted by Italian artist Gabriele Dell'Otto. The story centers on S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury: he discovers that Lucia von Bardas, the new prime minister of Latveria, is secretly funding a group of second- and third-tier super villains with technology left behind by the former Doctor Doom, intending to launch an attack on American soil. Fury reports the intelligence to the White House, but authorization is refused for political and diplomatic reasons. Bypassing official channels, he privately assembles Captain America, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Black Widow, Luke Cage, Wolverine, and S.H.I.E.L.D. super-powered agent Daisy Johnson into an off-the-books strike team and infiltrates Latveria to overthrow von Bardas's regime. After the mission, to protect this deniable operation, the participating heroes' memories are wiped by S.H.I.E.L.D. A year later, a retaliatory attack on New York erupts; Luke Cage is gravely injured and left in a coma, and Fury and New York's heroes are forced to fight the cyborg-modified von Bardas and her high-tech villain army. This volume is issue #1 of the series, primarily setting up the background of the secret operation, the assembling of the team, and the infiltration phase; the full arc of the series (including the mystery of the memory wipe and Fury's removal from office) requires reading the subsequent issues. The story is said to be inspired by a real intelligence operation Bendis heard about in his childhood, and its style is far from bright superhero storytelling, leaning closer to black ops and political thriller.

Summary

This is the true starting point of the event chain that would sweep through the Marvel Universe for years to come. Bendis does not write a satisfying "heroes fight villains" battle here; instead he turns the lens on Nick Fury: an intelligence chief who believes the system has failed and decides to act on his own. What he picks is not the Avengers' luxurious lineup but a group of misunderstood, marginalized characters operating in the streets and shadows—Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Wolverine—plus the cold-blooded agents Black Widow and Daisy Johnson. This "ragtag team carrying out a state-level black op" setup gives the whole work a hard-boiled spy-novel quality. Even more praiseworthy is Dell'Otto's artwork. The entire book uses fully hand-painted coloring, with light and shadow handled almost like oil painting; characters emerge from the dark areas like sculptures, making every operation that slips into darkness especially oppressive. The all-black stealth suit he designed for Spider-Man was even more influential, later included as an unlockable costume in games such as Marvel's Spider-Man and becoming a famous set piece familiar to fans. If you want to understand where those later stories of "heroes distrusting each other" came from, this volume is the unavoidable first brick.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
