Editor's review

Salmos do prisioneiro (Psalms of the Prisoner) is a work by the Portuguese writer Jaime de Magalhães Lima (1859–1936), released free in the original Portuguese by Project Gutenberg. Judging from the title and the author's identity, the work carries a strong tone of spiritual introspection and religious lyricism, unfolding in the form of "psalms" yet voiced by a "prisoner," creating a tension: prayer in bondage, contemplation in distress. Lima himself was an important figure in Portuguese literary and intellectual history, and his writing often engages with ethics, faith, and the individual's predicament; this book may serve as an entry point for understanding the temper of his thought. It should be noted that the available material provides only bibliographic information, with no content summary, so readers should not presume specific plot or structure. It is better suited to readers willing to read slowly and savor lyrical prose over and over, experiencing the rise and fall of language and emotion in a quiet setting; those expecting a strongly narrative story or clear plot progression may feel distanced from it.

FAQ

Is there a Chinese translation of this book? Can I read it without knowing Portuguese?
The available material shows that Project Gutenberg released the original Portuguese text and does not mention a Chinese translation. Reading it directly without Portuguese would be very difficult; it is advisable first to find a reliable Chinese or English translation as support, or to attempt the original only after acquiring some foundation in Portuguese. If you merely wish to understand the author's thought, relevant research materials may also be consulted.
Does the "prisoner" in the title refer to someone actually in jail?
The available bibliographic information alone cannot confirm whether "prisoner" is a literal reference or a symbolic expression. Placed alongside "psalms," the title itself creates a literary tension and may point to spiritual distress, a trial of faith, or some condition of bondage. Its specific meaning must be judged through close reading and research on the author, and it should not be assumed to be documentary prison writing.
Is this book long? Is it suitable to read in one sitting?
The available material does not provide information on length. Judging from the genre of "psalms," the work most likely consists of several lyrical pieces and is better suited to reading in segments than in one continuous sitting. It is recommended to proceed at the pace of the pieces, reading several at a time and allowing time for reflection, so as to better appreciate the emotional layers of the lyrical writing.

About the author

Jaime de Magalhães Lima Author · Portuguese · 1859–1936

Jaime de Magalhães Lima (1859–1936) was a Portuguese philosopher, poet, essayist and literary critic, born in Aveiro and a law graduate of the University of Coimbra. His writing spans literary criticism, social politics and religious ethics; his works include Democracy, Psalms of the Prisoner, Vegetarianism and the Morality of the Race and City and Landscape, as well as a study of Alexandre Herculano. He actively advocated vegetarianism and animal protection, and his works also resonate in the inspirational-growth category. Public information is limited and many details of his life are unclear, yet his surviving works show a writer who explored faith, social justice and personal cultivation in essays and poetic prose, in a calm and introspective style, taking part in the intellectual debates of Portugal from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century.
