- Prepare a French dictionary or bilingual reference; for long sentences, identify the main clause first, then work out the modifiers.
- Read alongside background material on nineteenth-century French popular literature to understand the period context of the elixir motif.
- For a reading group, assign chapters and have each person prepare vocabulary and plot questions for group discussion.

About the author
Jules Lermina (1839-1915) was a French author whose biography, including details of his nationality and life, is only sparsely documented in publicly available sources. The library holds eleven of his works, spanning a range of subjects: narrative works set in Paris such as Les loups de Paris, and collections of curious tales such as Histoires incroyables, Volumes I and II. He also wrote The Son of Monte-Cristo, Volume II, continuing the classic adventure vein of Alexandre Dumas; titles such as L'effrayante aventure and L'élixir de vie likewise suggest a recurring interest in suspense, the strange, and the mysteries of life. In addition, L'A. B. C. du libertaire shows that he also ventured into social and political thought. The library classifies his work under inspirational growth, yet his writing overall leans toward popular fiction and fantastical narrative, lively in style and rich in imagination.
