Editor's review

This is a novella by the Finnish author Juhani Aho, included in the Project Gutenberg collection in its original Finnish, as a public-domain eBook of Finnish and Finno-Ugric literature. The work centers on Finnish rural life, with plain, realist prose, and serves as an accessible introduction to late nineteenth-century Finnish literature and Nordic regional narrative. The value of the Gutenberg edition lies in being free, searchable, and easy to read across devices, making it especially suitable for language learners doing close reading against the original. Readers need not seek strong dramatic plotting, but should focus on the tension between characters and their environment, and on the author's fine observation of rural daily life. As a public-domain eBook, the formatting is text-based, without notes or introduction, so it is best used alongside a Finnish dictionary or relevant literary histories. Overall, it is better suited as material for language and literary study than as casual reading.

About the author

Juhani Aho (1861–1921) is a representative figure in the history of Finnish literature, and his writing spans fiction, essays, and drama. Twenty-nine of his works are held in this collection, including the novel Rautatie (The Railway), the essay collections Lastuja (Wood Shavings) I–VII, the religious portrait Heränneitä (The Awakened), the socially charged Hajamietteitä kapinaviikoilta (Scattered Thoughts from the Weeks of Rebellion), and the plays Panu and Yksin (Alone). These works show that he drew on rural life, religious faith, and social change, combining realism with lyricism: he depicted ordinary people's daily lives in detail while also addressing social conflict and spiritual crisis. Rautatie and other works have long been regarded as important achievements of Finnish realist literature and have had a lasting influence on later writers. Public information about his education, official posts, and other biographical details is limited, so no speculation is offered here.
