Editor's review

Yksin is an important work by the Finnish author Juhani Aho, here in the free eBook edition from Project Gutenberg. Aho is a representative realist writer in Finnish literary history; his works often take Finnish rural and urban life as their setting and focus on the emotions and fates of ordinary people. The language of this book is Finnish, placing it within Finno-Ugrian literature. For readers studying Nordic literature, Finnish language and culture, or late-nineteenth-century realist writing, this public-domain electronic text has value both as a historical document and as a literary text. The Project Gutenberg edition is easy to search, copy, and cite, making it suitable as supplementary reading for language learners or as a primary text for comparative literature research. Note that this is the original Finnish text, not a translation, so the reading threshold is high; the electronic edition is also relatively plain in layout and annotation and is not suited to readers expecting a detailed introduction or scholarly notes. Readers with some Finnish foundation are advised to read slowly with a dictionary and background materials, while literary researchers may situate it within the genealogy of Finnish realism.

About the author

Juhani Aho (1861–1921) is a representative figure in the history of Finnish literature, and his writing spans fiction, essays, and drama. Twenty-nine of his works are held in this collection, including the novel Rautatie (The Railway), the essay collections Lastuja (Wood Shavings) I–VII, the religious portrait Heränneitä (The Awakened), the socially charged Hajamietteitä kapinaviikoilta (Scattered Thoughts from the Weeks of Rebellion), and the plays Panu and Yksin (Alone). These works show that he drew on rural life, religious faith, and social change, combining realism with lyricism: he depicted ordinary people's daily lives in detail while also addressing social conflict and spiritual crisis. Rautatie and other works have long been regarded as important achievements of Finnish realist literature and have had a lasting influence on later writers. Public information about his education, official posts, and other biographical details is limited, so no speculation is offered here.
