Summary

This newly revised edition helps candidates master GMAT vocabulary in every respect. Responding to changes in the exam, it adds more than 1,000 new high-frequency words, gathers the vocabulary essential for the GMAT, provides precise definitions, and pairs them with numerous classic example sentences that reinforce memory through context. The memory method for each important word is explained in detail, mainly through the classic roots-plus-association approach and supported by word splitting, homophonic cues, and other techniques that make learning more enjoyable and vivid. Derivatives and words sharing the same root introduce English word formation. A rich appendix collects frequently tested GMAT words, phrases, mathematical formulas, and sentence patterns in four categories for easy review.

Editor's review

GMAT Vocabulary Selection, personally compiled by Yu Minhong, founder of New Oriental, is a classic vocabulary reference book for GMAT candidates. This book is not a simple listing of word lists; its core value lies in precise vocabulary selection and efficient memory methodology. With years of frontline teaching experience, Yu Minhong extracted high-frequency core vocabulary from a vast number of GMAT past papers and authoritative materials, and arranged them using scientific methods such as roots and affixes and associative memory, aiming to help candidates overcome vocabulary difficulties within limited time and lay a solid foundation for the reading, critical reasoning, and writing sections. The vocabulary definitions in this book are closely tied to the GMAT exam context, and most example sentences are drawn from past papers or foreign publications such as The Economist and The Wall Street Journal, ensuring the practicality and applicability of vocabulary learning. For candidates with tight preparation time or an intermediate English foundation, this vocabulary book provides a clear learning path and reliable content, making it a priority choice for building a GMAT vocabulary system.
