About the author
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist born in London and hailed as the "mother of science fiction." Her best-known work is Frankenstein, published anonymously in 1818. This Gothic novel, centered on the creation of life through science, blends an atmosphere of horror with reflections on human nature and responsibility, and is regarded as a founding work of the science fiction genre. She also wrote The Last Man and Valperga, works that often explore the future, catastrophe, and the human condition, combining Gothic gloom with serious social and ethical concerns. She also edited and published the poetry of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, making an important contribution to preserving his literary legacy. This library holds four English-language editions of Frankenstein, categorized under fine fiction and science fiction.
