This volume is the sixth in the "1–9" series. The series collects the DC New 52 story Superman Unchained, written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Jim Lee; the Chinese edition runs to nine volumes, corresponding to issues #1–9 of the original English run. The story takes place decades before Superman became Earth's guardian: another being of immense power fell from the sky, and the role he played in humanity's most devastating war became America's darkest secret. Years later that secret surfaces, and the long-buried "super-soldier" known as Wraith re-enters the world. Around him revolve the high-tech terrorist group Ascension, the mysterious substance Earthstone that can cut off alien technology, and the covert military agency led by General Sam Lane, Lois Lane's father. Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor is also secretly studying Superman's light-energy signature, seeking to turn the Man of Steel into a weapon capable of destroying an entire fleet. Facing an opponent whose powers match or even exceed his own, Superman's choices stand in sharp contrast to Wraith's—one obeys orders, the other follows his conscience. When the smoke clears, only the true Superman can break free of his chains. This volume continues the series' widescreen storytelling and lavish panel work, balancing action set pieces with inner character drama.
