1602: Book 2

This volume is the 1602: New World installment of the 1602 series—the five-issue mini-series by Greg Pak and artist Greg Tocchini launched in 2005, picking up where Neil Gaiman's original 1602 left off. The story unfolds mainly on Roanoke Island: the colony is governed by Ananias Dare, whose daughter Virginia Dare and young newspaperman Peter Parquagh face a dinosaur invasion while tensions between colonists and the native population mount. The Englishman Norman Osborn schemes to cheat the natives off the island with a contract and to pin the strange events on them and on "the Rogues"; newspaper publisher Jonah Jameson stokes fear of the powered. In this world the Hulk (David Banner) is believed to have assassinated King James, is recognized on the island by Peter, and is for a time branded an enemy of the colony. Meanwhile, in London, King James sends "Lord Iron" to the New World in pursuit of Banner, and the arrival of Lord Iron, Rhodes, and Captain Ross is brutal. Arrested for treason after declaring independence, Dare becomes the target of Osborn and Ross's scheme to seize the "Source" that grants the powered their abilities; Peter reveals the plot to constable Dugan, and Virginia forces Lord Iron and Rhodes to renounce their allegiance to England. In the end the colonists and the natives make peace, and Osborn is tried and imprisoned. This is Book 2 of the 1602 series, collecting the five-issue mini-series.
