高中甫

Gao Zhongfu is a translator and editor of foreign literature relatively familiar to Chinese readers, though public information about his personal life and educational background is limited. Judging from the thirteen works included in the database, his work centers mainly on German-language literature and Western classics: he has translated Stefan Zweig's novella A Letter from an Unknown Woman and The Decisive Moments in History, a collection of historical portraits, as well as Schnitzler's selected short stories and novels; he has also worked on biographies of Casanova, Stendhal and Tolstoy, and on mythology and folklore such as The Complete Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Greek Myths. His translations are plain and fluent, attentive to preserving the narrative rhythm and psychological depth of the originals, and his choices balance literary classics with the needs of younger readers, giving him a certain influence in popularizing foreign literature.
