About the author

Wang Weiyi's biographical information is very limited in publicly available sources: his nationality, dates of birth and death, and English name are not clearly recorded. What can be confirmed at present is only that a single work, Mingdao Pian (On Illuminating the Way), is attributed to him, and it is commonly classified under Eastern philosophy. Because the sources are so scarce, an understanding of the author is best approached through this work. With its title pointing to the illumination of the Way, Mingdao Pian concerns the clarification and analysis of principles and underlying order, falling within the scope of traditional Eastern philosophical discussion. Its writing centers on conceptual clarification and the exposition of meaning rather than on narrative or anecdote. Such writing tends to be speculative and well organized, using concise language to set out an understanding of fundamental questions about the universe and human life, and it therefore holds some appeal for readers of similar material. Wang Weiyi survives in bibliographic records through this one work, and his influence lies chiefly in the philosophical interest carried by Mingdao Pian; his personal life and background await further sources before they can be supplemented.
