About the author

Hong Chu was a man of letters of the Song dynasty; public sources on his life, career, and dates of birth and death are limited and await further research. His writings span cultural essays and poetic criticism. His best-known extant work is Xiangpu (Treatise on Incense), which records the categories of aromatics, their preparation, and their uses, making it an important source for the study of ancient Chinese incense culture. Another work, Hong Jufu Shihua, preserves anecdotes and critical remarks about the poetry circles of the Song dynasty and is useful for understanding the poetic views of the time. Four related titles are held in the collection, including the series Zhongguo Gudai Wuzhi Wenhua Congshu (Collected Works on the Material Culture of Ancient China) and its volume Xiangdian. His subjects lean toward material culture and the everyday life of the period, combining historical documentation with connoisseurial interest in a plain, practical style.
