杨宪益

Yang Xianyi is a translator held in high regard by Chinese readers, having devoted his life's work chiefly to translating foreign literary classics into Chinese. Public information about his life is limited, but the nine works collected here show that his translations span two great traditions, ancient Greek and modern European: they include foundational classical texts such as the complete Aristophanes comedies and the Odyssey, as well as renderings from different periods and genres, among them Journey to the Center of the Earth, Caesar and Cleopatra and Pygmalion, and The Song of Roland: Modern English Poems. In addition, Poems Translated by Yang Xianyi and Yang Yi, a collaboration between brother and sister, reflects their shared work in poetry translation. His translations balance accuracy with readability and have had a lasting influence on the transmission of foreign literature and classics.
