Makoto Shinkai is a well-known Japanese animation director and author whose written works often echo his films. The library currently holds two of his books, She and Her Cat and 5 Centimeters per Second, usually classified under foreign literature. Both works show his keen eye for the details of everyday life and his continuing attention to themes such as distance, time, and shifting emotions. She and Her Cat depicts the relationship between a person and a cat in a brief, restrained tone, while 5 Centimeters per Second follows the growth and missed connections of a boy and a girl through delicate, lyrical storytelling. Public information about Shinkai's personal biography is limited, so his life story cannot be described in detail here; judged by these works, however, his prose is quiet and clean, conveying subtle feelings through concrete scenes, and has thus attracted a measure of reader attention.
