Zhang Xinying

Zhang Xinying, born in 1967, is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Chinese at Fudan University. He focuses on modern Chinese literature and contemporary literary criticism, and is best known for his research on Shen Congwen. His representative works, The First Half of Shen Congwen's Life: 1902–1948, The Second Half of Shen Congwen's Life: 1948–1988 (later issued in a revised and expanded edition), and the combined two-volume full biography, present Shen Congwen's life and inner world through meticulous use of sources and plain, measured narration. Beyond biography, Zhang also writes prose and essays, such as You Qing: These People, Writings, and Matters of Modern China, and Qiming: Notes on My Fudan Teachers, and he has edited a poetry collection of Shen Congwen. He has also translated The Jungle Book, reflecting an interest in foreign literature. His writing balances scholarship with readability and has reached both academic and general readers.
