About the author

Lü Dongbin is a figure widely known in the history of Chinese Daoism, but public sources differ on his life and native place, and his dates of birth and death are not firmly established, so he can only be approached through transmitted texts and popular tradition. Four works attributed to Lü Dongbin are held in the collection: Qiao Yao Ge, Zhi Xuan Pian, Wu Pian Ling Wen, and Lü Zu Xing Xin Zhen Jing. Most belong to the Daoist traditions of inner alchemy and self-cultivation and moral exhortation, and are commonly classified under classic works, Eastern philosophy, and culture. These texts often take the form of songs, short chapters, or scriptures, with concise language and symbolic meaning; they discuss stages of cultivation while also emphasizing the cultivation of mind and ethical admonition, and have thus influenced religion, philosophy, and folk culture. Since confirmable biographical material is quite limited, readers are better advised to treat these works as traditional cultural texts and to understand them in light of the beliefs behind them and their later transmission, rather than insisting on reconstructing a complete historical biography.
