Stendhal

Stendhal (1783–1842) was a French writer born Marie-Henri Beyle in Grenoble. He followed Napoleon on his campaigns and later lived in Italy, experiences that provided material for his writing. His representative works include The Red and the Black, The Charterhouse of Parma, and On Love. His fiction often focuses on the individual's situation within social reality and inner conflict, and is noted for its fine psychological analysis, so that he is regarded as a pioneer of realist literature. The library holds thirty of his works, including multiple editions of The Red and the Black, the Li Jianwu translations, and the Stendhal collection; they are commonly classified under foreign literature, inspirational growth, and world classics. His restrained, lucid style, skilled at portraying the tension between desire and circumstance, has had a lasting influence on later fiction.
