Ye Mengzhu's biographical details are limited in publicly available sources, and neither his birth and death years nor his place of origin is clearly recorded. Based on the work attributed to him, his Yue Shi Bian is an important set of notes for understanding social conditions around the Ming–Qing transition. The book covers local anecdotes, institutions and regulations, changing customs, and accounts of notable figures. Much of its material derives from the author's firsthand observations, and it is carefully organized and detailed, offering both historical value and readability. Ye generally writes in a plain style, recording current affairs with particular attention to institutional change and social customs, reflecting an empirical and down-to-earth approach. Because the work preserves a wealth of firsthand information, it has long been valued by scholars of Ming–Qing society and culture, and it remains the main basis for Ye Mengzhu's later reputation.
