关惠文

Guan Huiwen is a translator about whom little public information is available. Eight of her works are held in this collection, most of them Chinese translations of foreign literary classics. Her choices centre on the German and ancient Greek traditions: representative translations include Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther, Zweig's Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman and Three Masters: Casanova, Stendhal, Tolstoy, as well as myth collections such as The Complete Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Greek Myths. Her translations also appear in editions intended for classroom and examination reading, such as Greek Myths for the first semester of fourth grade. In subject matter she moves across fiction, biography and folk myth, adjusting her language to each original: the epistolary novel reads with delicate lyricism, while the biographies and myths favour clear, accessible narration. These versions offer Chinese readers widely used texts for approaching European classics.
