Summary

In the final years of the Ming dynasty, Guan Tingyu, the son of a farmer in Penglai County, Laizhou Prefecture, Shandong, sees his family destroyed in a series of misfortunes set off when You Jinlu, having lost at gambling, turns to theft. To avenge his family, Guan travels to Huanlong Ridge in Zhangjiakou and takes Qiu Chenglong as his master, training hard in martial arts for four years.

After descending the mountain, Guan Tingyu travels with Qiu Huayu; on the way they learn that Wei Zhongxian's faction intends to harm Wang Wenyan, and the two intervene to help him. In Penglai County they uncover the truth of the past and kill the village head Cao Zheng and the jailer Hei Shen.

Later, in Ye Village, Wuyi County, they discover traces of the White Lotus Sect and learn by chance that You Jinlu is also there. With Ye Tingzhen's help, Guan Tingyu succeeds in killing You Jinlu.

At Linwan County, however, Guan Tingyu is framed by his former servant Guan Xing'er and thrown into prison; they escape and rescue Bu Qingyun, then continue on the road of revenge.

Editor's review

Set in the late Ming dynasty, the novel begins with the destruction of Guan Tingyu's family and follows his apprenticeship, his descent from the mountain to seek revenge, his aid to Wang Wenyan, his investigation of an old case, his killing of his enemies, and his framing and prison break in Linwan County, forming a clear throughline of growth and revenge. The author Zhang Genong follows the methods of the old-school wuxia novel, emphasizing lineage, cause and effect, and the ethics of chivalry; Guan Tingyu's transformation from a farmer's son into a vengeance-seeking martial artist is the book's most compelling thread. The investigation of the old case in Penglai County, the discovery of White Lotus traces in Ye Village, and the twist of Guan Xing'er's betrayal add suspense and courtroom-case flavor beyond the martial arts. Suitable as an introduction to or nostalgic read of traditional wuxia, and for readers interested in the narrative style of Republican-era old-school fiction. Readers need not demand strict historical accuracy; better to follow the characters' fates and savor the rhythm and camaraderie of an old-school chivalric tale.

Reading tips

  1. Read the first few chapters to understand Guan Tingyu's family tragedy and why he takes a master, then move into the revenge plot.
  2. Treat the Penglai County investigation and the Linwan County prison break as two nodes, and sort out each character's stance separately.
  3. When the White Lotus clue appears, note Ye Tingzhen's entrance and role, which sets up the sequel.
  4. If the buildup feels slow, read the post-descent chapters first, then go back to the apprenticeship section.

Is this book suitable for wuxia beginners?
Yes. The main plot is clear, centering on Guan Tingyu's family tragedy, his apprenticeship, and his descent to seek revenge; the lineage and cause-and-effect are explained clearly, and the old-school chapter format makes for easy分段阅读. If you are used to fast-paced modern fiction, you may need to adjust to the early buildup.
What are the key nodes in Guan Tingyu's revenge arc?
Mainly: taking Qiu Chenglong as his master and training for four years; helping Wang Wenyan after descending the mountain; returning to Penglai County to uncover the old case and kill Cao Zheng and Hei Shen; killing You Jinlu in Ye Village with Ye Tingzhen's help; and being framed by Guan Xing'er in Linwan County, escaping prison, and rescuing Bu Qingyun.
Is the White Lotus clue in the book related to the sequel?
Yes. In the main volume, White Lotus traces are discovered in Ye Village, Wuyi County, and the character Ye Tingzhen is introduced, laying groundwork for the sequel, in which the White Lotus leader Wang Haoxian sets a trap and everyone joins forces to destroy the sect.
