Summary

When we speak of China's ill-fated poets, we think of Huang Zhongze of the Qing dynasty, who suffered cold and hunger and died far from home. Some say he was "ranked first among poetry critics in the sixty years of the Qianlong reign." In fact, in my view, why only first in the sixty years of Qianlong? With his proud and aloof character, supreme genius, and versatile, passionate nature, in the two hundred years and more of the Qing dynasty, in terms of poetry and of character, he might well be called "first"!

Editor's review

Zhang Yiping, in an emotionally colored tone, comments on the Qing poet Huang Zhongze, writing both of his ill-fated life of cold and hunger and death far from home and focusing on the place of his poetic talent and character in the Qing poetic world. The book cites the saying that he was "ranked first among poetry critics in the sixty years of the Qianlong reign" and further extends the evaluation to poetry and character across the two hundred years and more of the Qing dynasty, bearing a distinctly personal judgment. For readers, the value of this book lies not in providing a neutral, complete biographical chronology but in showing how a modern writer understood another ill-fated poet: how a proud and aloof character, supreme genius, and versatile, passionate nature intertwined in hardship. It suits readers interested in Qing poetry and narratives of literati fate, and also serves as a sample for understanding the biographical-critical writing style of the Republican period. In reading, one should distinguish the author's admiration from factual narration, appreciating the emotional investment while maintaining independent judgment.

Reading tips

  1. Read a few representative poems by Huang Zhongze before reading the critical biography; it will be easier to understand the author's admiration for his poetic talent.
  2. While reading, record the author's admiring judgments separately from verifiable biographical facts to form your own judgment.
  3. Understand the narrative background of "suffering cold and hunger and dying far from home" in light of the circumstances of literati in the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing dynasty.
  4. After reading, find a modern chronology of Huang Zhongze to compare and test the distance between the claims in the critical biography and the historical facts.

FAQ

Is this book a strict academic biography?
No. It is closer to a critical biography bearing the author's emotions and judgments, focused on expressing admiration for Huang Zhongze's poetic talent and character rather than providing a complete chronology and item-by-item textual research. Readers should read it as a critical biography, not as an academic definitive edition.
Can I read this book without knowing Huang Zhongze's poetry?
You can read it, but your understanding will be reduced. The book's evaluations mostly revolve around his poetic talent; if you have never encountered Huang Zhongze's poems, it is advisable to browse a few representative works first and then read the critical biography, so you can better appreciate why the author gives such high praise.
Is the claim in the book that he was "ranked first in the sixty years of the Qianlong reign" credible?
This is an evaluative claim cited and elaborated in the book; it is a literary judgment rather than a statistical conclusion. Readers may understand it as an expression of admiration; if concerned about the actual evaluative landscape of the Qing poetic world, consult poetry talks and literary history materials separately.
What materials should I supplement after reading this book?
You may supplement a selected and annotated edition of Huang Zhongze's poetry, a modern scholarly chronology, and background chapters on literary history of the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing dynasty. This will allow you to understand the emotional judgments in the critical biography within a more complete context of historical sources and the poetic world.
