Summary

Macbeth is one of the four great tragedies by Shakespeare, the great dramatist and poet of the English Renaissance. The story tells of Macbeth, a general and cousin of Duncan, King of Scotland, who returns victorious from suppressing rebellion and repelling invasion on the king's behalf. On the road home he meets three witches, who prophesy that he will become king. After his return, urged on by his wife, he murders Duncan and takes the throne. To cover his tracks and prevent others from seizing power, he kills Duncan's guards one by one, then the general Banquo, and then the wife and children of the nobleman Macduff. Filled with fear and suspicion, Macbeth grows ever more ruthless until he is deserted by all. Besieged by Duncan's son and the English forces he has brought, Macbeth meets his end by beheading.

Editor's review

As one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies, Macbeth's value lies not only in its tense, driving plot but in its precise depiction of how the lust for power erodes the human heart step by step. From the witches' prophecy to regicide and usurpation, and on to relentless killing and suspicion, the psychological transformations of Macbeth and his wife form the play's core. This edition, printed by Shanghai Jinzhang Book Company, presents the main text as dramatic dialogue, requiring readers to reconstruct scenes from the lines and stage directions; it is therefore better suited to readers with some experience of reading drama. The recurring imagery of darkness, blood, and sleep also offers clues to the characters' inner lives. While reading, pay attention to Lady Macbeth's transformation from instigator to one crushed by guilt, and to the sense of nihilism conveyed in soliloquies such as "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow." Whether for a literature course, as reference for theatrical adaptation, or as a classic text for understanding human nature and power, this book deserves close reading.

FAQ

Can I read Macbeth directly without having read other works by Shakespeare?
Yes. The plot is relatively concentrated, centering on Macbeth's psychological changes after seizing the throne, and does not depend on background knowledge from other works. However, it is written in long stretches of dramatic dialogue, so on first reading it is advisable to clarify the characters first and then work gradually into the lines.
What role do the witches' prophecies play in the drama?
The witches' prophecies are the key trigger that drives the plot: they ignite Macbeth's lust for power, though what truly moves him to act is also his wife's urging and his own ambition. The prophecies recur throughout in ambiguous forms, deepening Macbeth's suspicion and fear.
Why is Lady Macbeth's character noteworthy?
Lady Macbeth is at first the main instigator of the murder, showing strong will, but as guilt accumulates she is gradually crushed by fear and remorse and finally suffers a mental breakdown. Her transformation contrasts with Macbeth's growing ruthlessness and is a crucial part of the play's psychological portrayal.
