This volume is the fourth issue of the Hawkman Vol. 4 series, corresponding to the original Hawkman Vol. 4 #4, "Beasts of Burden," with an August 2002 cover date, written by Geoff Johns and James Robinson and drawn by Rags Morales. The story picks up from the previous installments: archaeologist Carter Hall (Hawkman) has been drawn into the "Battlelands," an otherdimensional realm created by the god of death, where he is enslaved and tortured; his companion Shadow Thief is trapped alongside him. The only thing that can help him break free is Shadow Thief's assistance and Carter's command of his own will—but beyond freedom may lie an even greater cage. Meanwhile, Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl) returns to St. Roch with the artifacts and the trapped, and she must learn to grow under the crossbow bolts of Artemis Crock, the "Tigress." In this volume, Hawkman joins forces with the four-armed elephant-man tribe, the Komeriah, against their oppressor, the Mahnaka; moved by a memory of slavery from a past life, he resolves to side with the enslaved. The story closes on the suspense of a string of murders among St. Roch's power elites, and this volume also marks the first appearance of Police Commissioner Nedar and Officer Isabella.
