Summary

Macbeth (also translated as The Tragedy of Macbeth) is one of the titles in the "Xu Yuanchong Complete Collection of Chinese Translations of Classics" and one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. The plot tells of Macbeth, cousin of Duncan, King of Scotland. After distinguishing himself by quelling rebellion and repelling foreign invasion for the king, he harbors an ambitious desire to murder the king and seize the throne. Spurred by the witches' prophecy and supported by Lady Macbeth, Macbeth succeeds in usurping the throne and slaughters the generals and subordinates who threaten him. In the end, Lady Macbeth goes mad and dies, and Macbeth himself falls beneath the swords of his avengers.

Editor's review

*Macbeth* (also translated as *The Tragedy of Macbeth*) is one of the most psychologically profound and philosophically searching of Shakespeare's tragedies. This edition, published by The Commercial Press, provides Chinese readers with a reliable textual foundation through rigorous scholarly collation and precise annotation. The core of the tragedy is not external fate but how ambition erodes a hero's soul from within. Shakespeare renders Macbeth's descent from a decorated general to a bloodthirsty tyrant with meticulous detail, and his soliloquies rank among the finest psychological analysis in dramatic history. Faithful to the original text, The Commercial Press edition uses detailed background notes to help readers understand the historical and cultural context of the Elizabethan age and the play's rich metaphors and symbols—such as the recurring imagery of darkness, blood, and sleep. For modern readers, the value of reading *Macbeth* goes far beyond a simple story of regicide and usurpation. It compels us to examine ambition, guilt, and self-deception as universal human traits. In the editor's view, this edition is especially suited to readers who wish to study the play in depth; its scholarly annotations are a key that opens the door to understanding the tragic hero's complex inner world and Shakespeare's dramatic art.

Reading tips

  1. While reading, focus on the soliloquies of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, comparing how their guilt manifests and how their fates diverge
  2. Using the annotations in The Commercial Press edition, note the recurring natural anomalies (such as inverted day and night, or the crying strange birds) and consider their symbolic meaning
  3. After finishing the play, watch one or two classic stage or film adaptations to experience its dramatic tension and tragic atmosphere directly

FAQ

*Macbeth* is one of Shakespeare's 'four great tragedies.' What makes it most distinctive?
Compared with the other three great tragedies, *Macbeth* is distinctive for its almost suffocatingly tight pacing and for locating the root of tragedy entirely within the inner struggles of its characters, especially the Macbeths. It is closer to a psychological thriller, concentrating on how ambition gives rise to crime and how crime in turn devours conscience and reason.
What are the features of this Commercial Press edition?
The Commercial Press is known for publishing scholarly classics. This edition typically uses an authoritative translation recognized by scholars (such as Zhu Shenghao's or Liang Shiqiu's) and includes a detailed introduction, background information, character analysis, and linguistic notes. It emphasizes textual accuracy and scholarly reference value, making it a preferred choice for serious reading and research.
Why are the witches' prophecies so important in *Macbeth*?
The witches' prophecies are not simply fatalistic declarations; they act as a catalyst that ignites the ambition already latent in the characters. Their equivocal predictions (such as 'none of woman born') play cunningly with language and reveal how Macbeth interprets them through self-deception, leading him step by step to destruction. The prophecies are key to the plot and a mirror of the characters' weaknesses.
