Summary

Ma Gefei was a star student at the city police academy, and on graduating was picked by Deputy Director Zhou for the bureau's preliminary interrogation section. Within a few years he was known as one blade: however hard a case, it was cut clean once it reached his hands. His private life was less fortunate. His first wife, Yafeng, divorced him; his second, Shao Jing, cared for him tenderly, yet later grew so afraid of losing him that she watched his every move, and interrogating him became her daily pleasure. He loves her and will not abandon the marriage, though he knows his assistant Xiaohua quietly loves him. As a major case unfolds, he finds that Shao Jing's real-estate firm is implicated in a brutal demolition injury. Using all his skills he works step by step, cracking the case open through the boss Jiang Zude's trusted aide—who then vanishes from detention. Zhou obstructs him and has him demoted to a neighborhood post; Shao Jing is sent to a Chongqing site and killed in a staged car crash while shielding him. At the end Ma Gefei exposes Zhou as the mastermind protecting Jiang, is promoted to deputy director, and mourns Shao Jing, at last understanding her love.

Editor's review

Pre-examination intertwines two threads: professional deduction and marital emotion. What is most interesting is not how bizarre the cases are, but how the pre-examination officer seeks breakthroughs among confessions, evidence, and human relations. Ma Gefei is not written as an omnipotent case-solving machine; his professional judgment is often worn down by suspicion and exhaustion at home, and readers can see the mirror relation between "examining others" and "being examined." The novel lays out in some detail the procedural feel of pre-examination work, the rhythm of questioning, and the deduction of evidence, making it suitable for readers who enjoy the interweaving of socially minded criminal investigation, character psychology, and urban emotion. As you read, watch how the advancement of the case and the cracks in the marriage tighten in tandem; that sense of pressure in daily life is more rewarding than mere suspense reversals.

FAQ

Is this book better suited to crime fiction fans or readers of emotional fiction?
Both can enter it, but its center of gravity is how the pre-examination officer's work and life constrain each other. If you expect purely case deduction, the family thread may feel like it takes up too much space; if you like character circumstances and the case advancing together, you will feel more immersed.
Do I need to understand the pre-examination system before reading?
Not necessarily. The novel brings out the professional background through the characters' handling of cases, and ordinary readers can simply follow the plot; if you are completely uninterested in pre-examination procedure, your motivation to read may be weaker.
Does the marriage thread dilute the case?
The two threads mirror each other: Shao Jing's suspicion keeps consuming Ma Gefei between work and home, and the case in turn tests his judgment. If you accept this interweaving, it reads more smoothly; if you only want to see the case solved, you can skim the family quarrel passages.
Is it suitable as an introductory book for understanding pre-examination work?
It can serve as a literary, processed introduction to the imagination of such work, but it is a novel, not an institutional textbook. To understand real pre-examination procedures, you still need professional materials; it is better read for its professional atmosphere and the characters' fates.

About the author

李治邦 Author

Li Zhibang is a Chinese author about whom relatively little public information is available; details such as nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background are not clearly recorded. What can be confirmed is the three works collected here. His writing centers mainly on two genres, social fiction and mystery and suspense, with representative titles including Tianjin's Eighteen Streets, Preliminary Interrogation, and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission. Judging from these titles and categories, Li Zhibang's work tends to draw on everyday urban life, judicial interrogation, and the political and legal system, weaving plots and suspense within concrete social settings and showing a strong concern for social reality alongside genre storytelling. Tianjin's Eighteen Streets points to local customs and street life in Tianjin, while Preliminary Interrogation and Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission involve case hearings and political and legal work. Overall, his books present social reality through accessible popular narratives and should appeal to readers interested in realistic fiction and mystery and suspense.
