Summary

Revolutionary Brothers is a work of long-form documentary literature that gives a realistic, true-to-life account of the revolutionary deeds of the martyrs Hou Anguo and Hou Anzong of Yiyang, Henan.

They were two brothers who joined the revolution: Hou Anguo joined the Party in 1929 and Hou Anzong in 1934. For the sake of the revolutionary cause, they were unwilling to settle for a comfortable family life and chose to live as underground revolutionaries. In the end, during the anti-Japanese armed struggle of 1944, Hou Anguo, commander of the Yiyang Anti-Japanese Detachment, and his younger brother Hou Anzong both gave their precious lives.

Hou Anguo was an important figure in the history of the Communist Party of China's underground organization in western Henan; he founded its earliest underground Party organization there, the Hancheng Party Branch.

Editor's review

Revolutionary Brothers is a historical novel centered on brotherhood against the backdrop of modern China's revolutionary era. With delicate strokes, the author Si Weiping sketches the profound intertwining of individual fate and devotion to family and country in a distinctive historical period. The book's value lies not only in its narrative but also in its exploration of how human nature, loyalty, and faith manifest in complex ways amid the tides of the times. Its characters are well rounded and its emotional threads feel real and palpable, avoiding formulaic revolutionary storytelling and allowing readers to glimpse the struggles and choices of ordinary people caught in the currents of history. In literary terms, its language is plain yet full of tension, and its plot advances with a measured rhythm, laying out the grand sweep of history while also offering intimate portrayals of individual fates. For readers seeking to understand interpersonal relationships and the inner world of a particular historical period through literature, this book offers a distinctive perspective. It is not merely a record of a revolutionary era but also a mirror reflecting the many dimensions of human nature.

About the author

司卫平 Author

Si Weiping is an author about whom limited public information is available, with three works currently held in the collection. Judging from his representative titles, Yiguan Nandu (The Southward Migration of the Gentry), Dahan Tianshi Ban Chao (Ban Chao, Envoy of the Great Han), and Geming Xiongdi (Revolutionary Brothers), his writing spans two strands: narrative works built around historical figures and events, such as the story of Ban Chao's management of the Western Regions, and works leaning toward documentary literature, as suggested by Revolutionary Brothers. The collection's categories, which place his books under otherworldly fiction and documentary literature respectively, confirm this cross-genre character. Overall, Si Weiping is skilled at choosing narrative angles from both historical and contemporary material, and his works combine storytelling with a documentary flavor. However, no further confirmed public information is available about his life, nationality, or writing career.
