Summary

The Classic of Difficult Issues (Nanjing) is a foundational Chinese medical text in dialogue form. This work is a commentary on it by the Japanese Edo-period scholar-physician Teng Manqing (common name Junchang, style name Zhushui), composed in 1748 and first printed in the tenth year of the Horeki era (1760). Teng devoted thirty years to the study of the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo tradition. He held that the received Nanjing was a patchwork of broken bamboo slips and scattered records, no longer the original of Bian Que, and that later commentators, following one another, had made many discoveries yet often produced fragmented and disjointed explanations that failed to match the intent of the ancient sages. He therefore investigated the sequence in which the strips had been joined, clarified the causes of each question and answer, and completed this book with the aim of illuminating the ancient meaning. The work is in two juan: the upper juan covers difficulties 1 to 30, the lower juan difficulties 31 to 81. The order of the eighty-one difficulties differs from other editions, and the wording and sequence of sentences were adjusted accordingly so that question and answer follow one another coherently. The commentary is based on the Huangdi Neijing, integrates the views of physicians of successive ages, and adds the author's own opinions, often with new insights; for example, in discussing the causes of the "five accumulations" in difficulty 56, he opposes mechanical correspondence with the days of onset and emphasizes that the fundamental meaning of contraction and transmission of disease is summed up as "deficiency of the vital qi inviting pathogenic factors." Throughout the book, notes are interlined between the canonical text in black and white characters: the white characters continue the flow of the text and smooth the sense, while the black characters directly explain medical theory, so that the reader grasps everything at a glance. The work is regarded as an important achievement of the Edo textual-scholarship school of Japanese medicine and has reference value for Nanjing studies. Extant editions include the original Horeki Japanese printing, the 1930 Shanghai Zhongyi Shuju letterpress edition, the 1936 World Book Company edition in the Collectanea of Rare Medical Books, and the 1985 reprint by Shanghai Scientific and Technical Publishers.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
