Summary

The heroine, Su Su, is an orphan raised by an eccentric old man in Huaxi Village. When she is fourteen, the old man leaves without explanation, stating only in a note that he owes a debt of gratitude to the Mo family of Jianghai City and asks Su Su to repay it when she has the chance. As she travels the world searching for him, she makes a modest name for herself, but still finds no trace of the old man. With nowhere else to turn, she returns to Jianghai City, where the Yang family "takes her back" and has her replace their daughter as the fiancée of the Mo family's disabled eldest son, Mo Chen. Su Su resolves to repay the old man's debt by helping the Mo family, and to ask his old acquaintance Mo Huaishan about his whereabouts.

The hero, Mo Chen, does not know that Su Su is his fiancée and has always refused to meet her, yet he is preoccupied with searching for "the girl he met once." Until that day...

Editor's review

As the second volume of Trouble Incarnate, this installment continues the main thread of Su Su repaying the old man's debt and navigating between the Mo and Yang families, and pushes the mismatched relationship between the leads—engaged yet strangers to each other—toward its resolution. Author Meng Meng excels at advancing romance through brisk dialogue and everyday detail; Su Su's independent stubbornness plays off Mo Chen's awkward devotion, giving the story tension without losing its lightness. This volume serves to untangle the knot: the birth-origin clues, the old man's whereabouts, and Mo Chen's fixation on "the girl he met once" gradually converge. It suits readers who have followed the series to this point and want the relationship to become clear. Read it back-to-back with the middle volume, and watch for shifts in how characters address one another and for time jumps, so that split-volume gaps don't cause you to miss foreshadowing. Overall it works as light reading for commutes or bedtime; don't demand too much real-world logic.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Romance readers following the Unruly series who want to see the leads' relationship resolved
  • Urban romance fans who enjoy an independent heroine paired with a proud, deeply devoted hero
  • Office workers and students seeking light, stress-relieving reading in short sessions
  • Genre-fiction readers partial to classic setups like substitute marriage and reclaimed kinship

Not a good fit for

  • Readers who have not read the middle volume and lack basic familiarity with the characters' relationships
  • Readers who prefer strict realism and strongly socially minded narratives
  • Readers clearly averse to formulaic setups such as substitute marriage and reclaimed kinship

Reading tips

  1. Briefly review the character relationships and key events at the end of the middle volume before starting this one, to reduce the disjointed feel of reading volumes separately.
  2. Read chapter by chapter and note the shifts between Su Su's and Mo Chen's perspectives to appreciate the tension of the mismatched relationship.
  3. Jot down the old man's clues as you go, then compare them with the middle volume's foreshadowing to check whether the payoff is complete.
  4. For bedtime reading, two or three chapters per session is enough to avoid losing rest to dense plotting.

FAQ

Can I read this volume without having read the middle one?
Yes, but the experience will suffer. This volume builds on the character relationships and the old man's trail from the middle volume; without knowing the premises—Su Su's substitute marriage into the Mo family and Mo Chen's refusal to meet his fiancée—you may find motives and forms of address confusing. It is best to at least skim the final chapters of the middle volume first.
What mysteries does this volume mainly resolve?
According to the available information, this volume advances the main threads of Su Su repaying the old man's debt, helping the Mo family, and inquiring after the old man's whereabouts, while also handling the mismatched relationship in which Mo Chen does not know his fiancée's identity yet pines for "the woman he met once." The specific resolution should be judged from the text; watch for where the birth-origin and romance threads converge.
Where does the romance between Su Su and Mo Chen go in this volume?
The information shows that Mo Chen keeps refusing to meet his fiancée while inquiring after "the woman he met once," and Su Su is in fact that fiancée. This volume revolves around that mismatch, and the relationship moves toward clarity. The specifics are in the text; readers can watch how both characters' attitudes shift before and after the identities are revealed.
