Summary

This volume is the Afghanistan installment in the "Guides to the World" series published by the Social Sciences Academic Press, compiled by Wang Feng, a scholar at the Institute of West-Asian and African Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences who has long researched Middle Eastern affairs. Landlocked in the heart of Asia, Afghanistan borders Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the north, Iran to the west, and Pakistan to the south and east, while its narrow northeastern Wakhan Corridor touches China. Since antiquity a meeting point of Eastern and Western civilizations and a arena of great-power rivalry, it has been called the "crossroads of Asia." Following the national-guide format, the book is organized into seven chapters covering the country's natural and human foundations, historical evolution, political system, economic structure, military forces, culture, education and health, and foreign relations: from geographic location, administrative divisions, mountains, rivers and climate, mineral, plant and animal resources, to population, ethnic groups, languages, religion, and folk customs and festivals; from the succession of ancient civilizations and the Arab and Mongol conquests, to the founding of the Durrani dynasty, the 19th-century Anglo-Afghan Wars, Amanullah Khan's independence and reforms, the reign of Zahir Shah, the Daoud coup, the Soviet invasion, civil war and the rise of the Taliban, up to the reconstruction process after the September 11 attacks of 2001. Separate chapters survey political parties and local military-political factions, agriculture and animal husbandry, industry, mining and transport, finance and foreign trade, education, science and technology, and the press and publishing, as well as Afghanistan's relations with the United States, Russia and Central Asia, Pakistan, Iran, India and China. Factually detailed and clearly organized, the book is an important Chinese-language reference for understanding Afghanistan's national conditions and the Afghan question.

Editor's review

Reading tips
