Summary

This volume is the first in The Collected Works of Zhou Zumo and contains his Wenxue ji (Studies in Philology).

Wenxue ji gathers 44 papers, notes, prefaces, and postscripts written before 1962 and was published by Zhonghua Book Company in 1966.

For the present edition of The Collected Works of Zhou Zumo, we have used the Zhonghua edition as the base text, converted vertical setting to horizontal, added book-title marks, and corrected some errors. A General Index of Terms, Names, and Works has been compiled.

The original pieces “Preface to the Collated Edition of Guangyun,” “Two Postscripts to Guangyun,” “Preface to the Collated Edition of Fangyan,” “After Reading Liu Xi’s Shiming,” “The Author of Erya and the Date of Its Completion,” “Postscript to the Old Edition of Guo Pu’s Commentary on Erya,” “Guo Pu’s Commentary on Erya and the Erya yinyi,” “After Reading Zheng Qiao’s Commentary on Erya,” and “Postscript to the Reprinted Yaxue kao” have already been included in Volume 3 (Collated Edition of Guangyun), Volume 4 (Collated Edition of Fangyan, with the Collated Edition of Shiming), and Volume 5 (Collated Edition of Erya) of the collected works; they are therefore not reprinted in this volume and are listed by title only.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Students, teachers, and researchers in Chinese linguistics, phonology, philology, and classical bibliography, as core reference material
  • Readers of literature and history with a serious interest in classical Chinese texts who need to learn traditional philological methods systematically
  • Readers interested in traditional Chinese scholarly methods and research ethos who wish to improve their critical and evidential skills
  • Those with some classical Chinese foundation who want to understand the historical evolution of Chinese and the principles behind textual criticism

Not a good fit for

  • General readers seeking light entertainment or superficial cultural introductions; the content is highly specialized and academic
  • Complete beginners with no background in traditional Chinese language and philology, who may face barriers to comprehension

Reading tips

  1. Read selectively according to one's research direction; linear reading is unnecessary. Begin with autobiographical essays such as "My Experience in Scholarship" to understand the author's scholarly trajectory before turning to the specialized papers
  2. Read alongside the original classical texts or relevant research history to better grasp the problem consciousness and scholarly contributions of the arguments
  3. For complex phonological papers, keep a basic phonology textbook or reference work at hand, and try to trace the author's line of argument

FAQ

Can I understand this book without a foundation in phonology?
Some core papers, such as the study on Qieyun, involve fairly deep specialized phonological knowledge and may be difficult to read without a foundation. But the collection also includes many articles on palaeography and exegesis, classical textual reading, and scholarly method that rely more on philology and logic and demand less phonological knowledge, so readers can choose essays according to their background.
How does this book differ from Zhou Zumo's Author's Own Selection of Academic Writings?
The Analects of Questioning Learning was first published in 1966 and reprinted several times; its essays span a longer period and are more comprehensive, making it Zhou's most representative collection of papers. The Author's Own Selection appeared later, personally chosen by the author in his final years, and is more concise, a distillation of his scholarly output. The two overlap in core articles, but The Analects of Questioning Learning is larger and more systematic.
How does this book practically help modern readers study classical Chinese?
Although a scholarly monograph, its discussions of the original meanings of characters, the origins of words, and the collation of textual errors can fundamentally deepen readers' understanding of classical vocabulary and texts. It teaches a rigorous method of interpretation that helps readers move beyond vague impressions of classical Chinese toward precise semantic understanding and a historical perspective, thereby improving their ability to read and analyze classical texts independently.

About the author

周祖谟 Author

Zhou Zumo was a scholar in the field of Chinese language and philology. Public information about him is limited, and no systematic record of his dates, birthplace, or academic training is available. Judging from the eight works held in the collection, his writings focus on the collation of ancient texts and the history of the Chinese language. His representative works include the Annotated Edition of Guangyun, Collation and Commentary on Erya, Collation and Commentary on Fangyan, and Collation and Commentary on the Luoyang Qielan Ji, most of which are critical editions reflecting solid textual scholarship, phonology, and exegesis. The two volumes of Wenxue Ji, Studies on the Evolution of Rhyme Categories in the Han, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, and Lecture Notes on Chinese Vocabulary concern scholarly notes, rhyme evolution, and vocabulary teaching. His style is rigorous and plain, emphasizing evidence and source materials; his critical editions serve as important references for the study of ancient dictionaries and rhyme books and contribute to both Chinese philology and historical textual research.
