Summary

In the essay collection Encounters, the author writes in plain yet vivid prose about his journey from youth to adulthood, from soldier to writer, from screenwriter to producer, telling of the people and events of different eras, lamenting the changes of the times, and capturing the beauty of human nature. Encounters uses the essay as a bridge into the heart of a "golden screenwriter," whose resilience, plainness, sincerity, and warmth are just like his writing. There is no grand narrative, only personal memories of a life.

Editor's review

Encounters is a warm-hearted turn by military writer Shi Zhongshan, following Years of Passion, toward the subtle recesses of human nature. The book departs from the grand historical narratives and fervent revolutionary sentiments of his earlier works, focusing instead on the emotional encounters and spiritual predicaments of ordinary people in peacetime. Through several seemingly independent yet interconnected stories, it recounts the different choices urban men and women make at life's crossroads, and how they guard, miss, or rediscover genuine feeling in ordinary life. With the concise, restrained brushwork characteristic of a military writer, Shi Zhongshan depicts the complex folds of his characters' inner lives, revealing the emotional poverty and spiritual searching that contemporary people face in an age of material abundance. The book does not deliberately manufacture dramatic conflict; instead, through precise capture of everyday details, it lets readers feel the undercurrents of emotion and the weight of life within a calm narrative. The value of this work lies in the quiet reading experience it offers, guiding us to consider how to settle our hearts amid the fast pace of modern society, and how to understand the accident and necessity behind "encounter."
