Summary

For many years, Readers magazine has always taken the promotion of the finest human culture as its mission, upholding the publication purpose of "drawing widely from China and abroad, gathering the essence, inspiring thought and broadening horizons," and following the idea that "to choose Readers is to choose an excellent culture." It discovers the truth, goodness and beauty in human nature and embodies humanistic care. In content and form alike it keeps pace with the times, pursuing high taste and high quality and striving for fine work, and through the richness and diversity of its form and content it has won the love and support of readers of all ages and from all walks of life.

Editor's review

As the collected edition of Reader 2012 No. 8, this volume continues the magazine's editorial approach of gathering the best from China and abroad: short essays, character sketches, overseas observations, and life notes are interwoven, with most pieces readable in ten to twenty minutes, suitable for casual browsing in fragmented time. Its value lies not in providing systematic knowledge but in using many human stories and details to present plain qualities such as kindness, resilience, and restraint without stiffness. The editors' craft shows in what they leave out: they do not chase hot topics or force sentiment, and most pieces leave room at the end, easily prompting a little self-reflection. The format is light and portable, suitable for commuting, bedtime, or travel. If you are emotionally tired and need short texts as a buffer, this issue's pace will suit you well; it can also serve as family reading, with elders and teenagers each finding what they need.

Reading tips

  1. No need to read in table-of-contents order; open a piece at random and pause after finishing before continuing.
  2. After each piece, note in one or two sentences the detail that moved you, and look back a month later.
  3. Pick suitable pieces to read aloud to your child, then talk about how each of you felt.
  4. Keep it by the bed or in your bag; a few minutes waiting for a bus is enough for one piece.

FAQ

Is this book suitable for reading from beginning to end?
Not really. The magazine consists of independent short pieces with no plot connection, and reading straight through can easily cause fatigue. A better way is to open a piece at random, finish it and close the book, then take up the next piece after a while, leaving room for each to linger.
How is it different from ordinary books on the market?
It is more like a selected reader collection than a monograph built around a single theme. Its advantage is broad selection and light burden per piece; if a piece does not suit you, you can skip it without worrying about missing context. The cost is that the knowledge is not systematic, so for systematic study you still need to find a monograph.
Can children read it?
Most pieces are plain in language and short, so the barrier is low for young readers, especially the articles about family affection, growing up, and the circumstances of ordinary people. However, the selections are aimed at adult readers, and a few pieces touch on social issues that parents should guide children through; for younger children, parent-child reading is recommended.
