Summary

Reader is a comprehensive digest magazine sponsored by Gansu People's Publishing House, formerly known as Reader's Digest. For many years the magazine has taken the promotion of humanity's finest culture as its mission, upholding the editorial principle of 'drawing widely from China and abroad, gathering the essence, enlightening thought and broadening horizons.' It keeps pace with the times in both content and form, pursuing high taste and high quality and striving for excellence, and through the richness and diversity of its form and content it has won the affection and support of readers of all ages and from all walks of life.

Editor's review

As the year-end 2011 issue, this magazine continues Reader's Digest's familiar editorial taste: it does not chase hot topics or rush to judgment but interweaves essays, personal sketches, character fragments, and life stories so readers encounter different experiences and moods in short form. Its value lies mainly in carving out a quiet reading interval from a busy day rather than providing systematic knowledge. Finishing one piece soothes the emotions and gently opens up one's thinking. It suits being kept at hand for casual browsing—no need to read in order or finish at once. For longtime readers, it is a familiar year-end companion; for new readers, it is a light entry point into the publication's character.

  3. Copy lines that move you into a notebook and review them once at month's end.
  4. Have each family member pick one piece and share it for five minutes after dinner.

About the publisher

Duzhe Publishing & Media Corp. takes Duzhe magazine as its core brand, with publishing directions covering periodicals, books, and textbooks and supplementary teaching materials, among which the Duzhe series of periodicals is its most representative publication. The books in the database are mainly various 2012 issues of Duzhe, such as several issues from No. 14 to No. 24, reflecting the publisher's approach of drawing on the author resources of the Duzhe editorial department and featuring the collected publication of periodical content. In addition to periodical publications, the company is also involved in the publication and distribution of books and textbooks and supplementary teaching materials. FAQ

I have never read Reader's Digest; can I start with this issue?
Yes. Selections are relatively standalone by issue, so a single issue can be read on its own without catching up on earlier content. Start with short essays, then expand by column once you find your taste—this makes it easier to build your own reading rhythm.
Is this issue suitable for reading all at once?
Not really. Digests have many pieces and scattered themes, and reading straight through can be tiring. Reading in several sessions, two or three pieces each time, helps retention and better fits its companion-style positioning.
Is it suitable for the office or travel?
Yes. Individual pieces are short and can be paused and resumed at any time, which suits fragmented time. When traveling, bring a pen and underline lines you want to remember; organizing them later is easier.
Can children read it?
Middle-school students and above can generally read it independently; the content is mostly short pieces on life and emotions. For younger children, parents should flip through first, choose suitable pieces to read together, and talk about the people and events—more effective than leaving them alone.
