Summary

Founded in April 1979 by veteran publishers Chen Hanbo, Chen Yuan, Fan Yong and others, Dushu is now published by SDX Joint Publishing Company. A monthly review of ideas and culture centered on books, it attends to books themselves and to the people, events and phenomena within and around them. Its coverage spans major cultural developments and social currents, embracing literature, history, philosophy and the social sciences, along with architecture, fine art, film, television, theater and other arts criticism, and some natural science. The journal prizes openness of thought, equality of debate and readable prose, and its regular columns—Wenmo Jiachang, Duanchang Shu, Dushu Duanzha and Pinshu Lu—have long presented scholars' and writers' reflections on reading in the form of book reviews, essays, notes and correspondence. Its inaugural issue opened with "No Forbidden Zones in Reading," a title that became a defining slogan for the cultural and intellectual circles of the new era. Over the decades since, the magazine has been regarded as a "spiritual homeland" for generations of readers and has been listed among the Chinese Core Journals and CSSCI source journals. Its mission: to showcase the thought and wisdom of readers, and to gather humanistic care for contemporary life.

Editor's review
