This is the authorized companion book to the acclaimed interview program The Actor Speaks, produced by the CCTV-6 program Today's Film Review. The program was initiated by actress Zhou Xun and the production team; as interviewer, Zhou Xun held conversations with more than twenty performers, including Feng Yuanzheng, Xi Meijuan, Jiang Wenli, Wang Qingxiang, Huang Bo, Chen Jianbin, Shu Qi, Duan Yihong, Sandra Ng, Qin Hailu, Wang Qianyuan, Zhao Lixin, Song Jia, Wang Baoqiang, Wang Yanhui, Huang Jue, Yan Ni, Yu Hewei, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Dong Zijian, Joan Chen and Jackson Yee. The book collects conversations with 22 performers from the first two seasons. The book unfolds in two parts, "The Craft of Acting" and "The Character of Acting," with each chapter titled by a keyword such as "Truthfulness," "Sinew," "Roots" or "Warmth" and devoted to one performer. Starting from specific shooting experiences, the actors discuss how they enter a role, handle emotion and work with directors and scene partners; they also speak about their understanding of characters, their reverence for the profession, and the self-cultivation and life insights they accumulate off set. The production team has also compiled "Actor's Notes" and "Actor's Messages," distilling the experience and judgments scattered through the conversations into reusable expressions. The book opens with an introduction on "waiting in the wings": in an age that prizes novelty and speed, actors are rushed onto the stage by time and lose the room to settle and prepare. What this book seeks to preserve is exactly that composure and respect belonging to the performer. The book runs about 420 pages, is bound in exposed-spine sewn binding so it lies flat, and comes with a small booklet.
