Summary

Xuanzang, whose secular name was Chen Yi, was born into an official family in the Guanzhong region. In the eighth year of the Daye era, the court issued an edict to ordain fourteen monks in Luoyang. The eleven-year-old Chen Yi secured his chance in his own way and was exceptionally ordained as a novice monk, receiving the Dharma name Xuanzang.

At the end of the Sui dynasty, rival forces rose across the land. Luoyang, at the eye of the storm, was ravaged by famine, with nine out of ten households left empty. Xuanzang began to travel the world with his books, studying under many renowned masters, and became a celebrated young monk of his time—while accumulating ever more confusion and doubt.

When no one could any longer answer his questions, Xuanzang fixed his gaze on India.

17 years, 56 countries, 110 cities, 1,335 scrolls of scriptures, 50,000 li of travel = Xuanzang's journey to the West. The newly risen Tang dynasty, the Turks on horseback, the mysterious Central Asia, India where diverse schools of thought clashed... all unfold through the solitary seeker's arduous quest for truth, making it the greatest expedition in the history of human walking.

Editor's review

In eight volumes, one man's fifty-thousand-li journey comes to life: from ordination in Luoyang and travels during the late Sui, through the Western journey across Turkic lands and Central Asian kingdoms, to the quest for Dharma in India and the translation of scriptures after his return. Chang Ru restores the historical route into a walk with warmth—famine, border passes, language barriers, and divergent lineages are all rendered concretely. Xuanzang is no longer merely a symbol from Journey to the West, but a solitary wanderer who keeps accumulating questions and insists on finding answers. The value of this set lies in letting readers see the weight of "seeking truth": behind seventeen years, fifty-six countries, and 1,335 scrolls lies exceedingly concrete endurance and choice. The narrative pace is steady and calm, suited to readers willing to read slowly—advancing volume by volume on the commute or before sleep, with a little geographical and historical cross-referencing along the way, the rewards will be more solid.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers interested in Xuanzang's Western journey and Tang-era Western Regions history
  • Those who enjoy long historical narratives and are willing to read volume by volume at a slow pace
  • Readers who wish to understand perseverance and the meaning of seeking knowledge through a person's experience
  • Book lovers in need of a long-term companion for their desk

Not a good fit for

  • Readers who prefer fast-paced, plot-driven books and have limited patience
  • Researchers expecting strict academic verification or extensive annotations
  • Readers looking only for Journey to the West-style tales of gods and demons

Reading tips

  1. Advance volume by volume; after finishing each one, mark the corresponding route on a map to build a sense of space.
  2. When encountering unfamiliar place names or country names, do a quick lookup rather than interrupting the reading; revisit after finishing.
  3. Slow down for the section on translating scriptures after his return, and compare it with the earlier quest for Dharma.

FAQ

What is the relationship between this set and Journey to the West?
Both share the prototype of Xuanzang's journey to the West, but this book unfolds according to the historical itinerary, portraying a real traveler's quest for Dharma and his travels, with no gods or demons. If you are familiar with Journey to the West, you can instead contrast the difference between the historical figure and the literary image, which makes the reading more enjoyable.
Is reading eight volumes a struggle?
It is indeed a long read, but the narrative advances along the route, and each volume is relatively self-contained. It is best to set a rhythm volume by volume rather than striving to read continuously; pause briefly after each volume, review the route and characters, then enter the next stretch of the journey—the burden will be much lighter.
Can I read it without knowing Central Asian and Indian history?
Yes. The book provides narrative explanations of the countries and people along the way and does not rely on specialized background. Keep a simple map at hand while reading and mark key place names; after finishing, you will have a more intuitive understanding of the clash of ideas in the Tang-era Western Regions and India.

About the author

昌如 Author

Public information about Chang Ru, the author, is currently limited: no clear records are available regarding nationality, dates of birth and death, or educational background, and confirmable details come mainly from the works published under this name. One work is held in the collection, the long serial novel Xuanzang the Walker (8 volumes), commonly classified as otherworld-continent fiction. Drawing on the historical figure of Xuanzang and his westward journey, it develops a narrative with fantasy and adventure elements. Judging from this work, Chang Ru tends toward large-scale, continuous storytelling, focusing on the protagonist's growth and choices over a long journey, and using an imagined world to explore ideas of faith, travel, and seeking. With only one work available for study, the full range of the author's writing is difficult to assess; readers and researchers may examine the series itself to observe its narrative pacing and thematic preferences.
