Summary

Once humanity has fully tamed a planet, it begins to tame the people on that planet. Deep-space amnesiac corporate drone Lvge is dispatched on a mission and meets Dodo, a local fixer of complex background and extraordinary abilities. As the two adventure together, they witness the planet's vitality and beauty, and also its eeriness and pain. As Lvge's memories resurface, the crisis and truth surrounding the entire Fei Star are revealed. Hallucinogenic mushrooms, zombie wildebeests, warrior clans, wild plastic surgery clinics, cyber ascetics... together they form this absurd, meme-laden, wildly romantic road story.

Editor's review

"Orbital Rites" is a unique work blending science-fiction premises with humanistic reflection. The author Anhao deftly sets the laws of celestial motion in metaphorical counterpoint to the order of human society, building a narrative field both vast and delicate. This is not hard SF in the traditional sense; its core appeal lies in using the conceptual device of "orbital rites" to explore the tension of individual fate within an established social structure, the boundaries of free will, and the mechanisms by which a collective unconscious takes shape.

In narrative structure, the author adopts a polyphonic, multi-threaded approach: each thread traces the orbit of a "planet," and all finally converge at a particular node of time and space, producing a striking dramatic effect. This structure demands some patience from the reader, but the pleasure it yields is correspondingly more lasting and profound.

Notably, the book's discussion of technoethics has real-world resonance. At a time when AI and big data increasingly permeate daily life, the conflict between algorithmic domination—symbolized by "rites"—and human autonomy is especially pertinent. The author offers no simple answers, but through the characters' struggles and choices presents the complexity of the problem.

Stylistically, Anhao's language is cool yet poetic, displaying astonishing imagination in depicting cosmic-scale time and space while rendering characters' inner lives with extreme delicacy. This balance of tensions reflects the author's mature craft.

Overall, "Orbital Rites" is a work that calls for immersive reading. It offers science fiction a new aesthetic possibility—no longer mere technological prophecy, but a spiritual lens that translates cosmic physics into an observation of human civilization.

About the author

暗号 Author

Anhao is an author about whom limited public information is available. The library currently holds two of this author's works, one in literary appreciation and one in science fiction. Among them, Scientific Phenomena in Classical Chinese Poetry: Natural History in Classical Chinese Poetry starts from classical verse and examines the scientific phenomena and natural-historical knowledge it contains, linking the humanities with observation of nature within a framework of literary appreciation and showing an interest in close reading of ancient texts. Planetary Rites, by contrast, turns to science fiction, building its narrative around the order of motion of planets and celestial bodies. The two works span a considerable range of subject matter, one devoted to interpretation of traditional poetry and prose, the other to fictional writing with an astronomical flavor; what they share is the author's attention to nature, the cosmos, and systems of knowledge. Because biographical information is lacking, the full picture of this author's style and influence awaits further material.
